“Since I had a place, since I had wanted it, my question was: is the place good for art? Could the place allow us to do theater that without it wouldn’t exist, that wouldn’t have that beauty? But also would the place allow us to live, with the other artists, with the public, differently? More fairly? Marie-José Malis, Theater Director
“So this place could be a greenhouse and house a workbench, a place for cultivating ideas and making arts. Meaning that something new is taking place here, but without definitive direction. Solid and malleable, drawn as being in the process of being defined, unstable and habitable. »GGSV Studio
The project concerns the renovation of La Commune, a national drama center in Aubervilliers. The program concerns the public reception areas – reception desk, hall, cloakroom, bookshop and restaurant.
You enter the theater through the vestibule which plunges visitors into a deep blue. The color, abyssal, covers the floor, the walls and the ceiling and momentarily erases the architecture. The dematerialized space acts as a decompression airlock and prepares the mind. The room narrows and leads to a vast hall, covered with formwork boards up to half height. This inner skin, both symbol and equipment of the site, affirms the place as a space in transformation, in reflection. Made of the same material, furniture and real estate merge. They constitute the elements of a vast workbench; rooms to arrange, to modify according to the needs of the public, the associations, the artists who bring the place to life. The posters and speeches are pasted on the walls and overlap as the news unfolds.
